Children’s book ‘I am Not a Number.’

This book, though widely used as a reader for children to learn about residential schools, created some problems last year when it was sent home with Third graders in Hay River, NWT.  A mother complained that as she read it to her son, it triggered memories of her family members who had been to residential schools.

As well, the mother said that the book exposed her son to the difficult subject of residential schools before she was ready to discuss it with him.
